Breed Description:

The Anglo-Kabarda breed of horse (also known as "Anglo-Kabardin") is a mix of a Russian horse breed, the Kabarda, and a Thoroughbred.  It was bred to be a tough workhorse and saddle horse in the most rugged terrain and cold weather. It mixes the sturdiness, gentle temperament and powerful build of the Kabardin, and the speed and superior size of the Thoroughbred. The individual must possess between 25% and 75% Thoroughbred blood in order to qualify for registry in the United States.  This breed was first recognized in the Caucuses region of Russia in 1966.

The Anglo-Kabarda shares much of the conformation of the Thoroughbred. It resembles the classic carriage horse of the 18th and 19th centuries, with a long back and powerful body. Because of this conformation, this breed is seldom raced, but does excellent with driving competitions. The Anglo-Kabarda breed of horse is usually brown or bay in color.  It possesses a sturdy bone structure, a powerful neck, and deep chest.  The Anglo-Kabarda has hard, strong feet and rarely presents with any hoof injury or problem.

This horse is known for its speed, endurance, and strong constitution. The Anglo-Kabarda breed of horse is sure-footed on difficult mountain terrain, and is comfortable outdoors even in the coldest winter. This breed will paw deep into the snow to find edible grass, twigs, and other roughage.

The Anglo-Kabarda breed of horse is used as a saddle horse on the farms of the Caucasus and in recent years in sometimes seen in Olympic and other national and international competitions.

Temperament:
The Anglo-Kabarda breed of horse is gentle of temperament and a willing hard worker. It does not possess the high temper and flightiness of the Thoroughbred.
Living Conditions:
The Anglo-Kabarda breed of horse is extremely winter-tolerant and is bred to pasture year-round, even in the coldest weather. It is not a stable horse, and does best if given a lot of space to roam and time outdoors.
Origin:
The Anglo-Kabarda breed of horse was created in the early part of the 20th century by Russian farmers in the northern Caucasus region, who wanted a horse with the sturdiness of the native Kabarda and the size and speed of the English Thoroughbred. The needed a horse that could pasture comfortably all year round in the harsh weather, and could negotiate the mountain roads, but would be bigger and travel faster over long distances. Kabarda mares were first cross with Thoroughbreds to create the Anglo-Kabarda breed of horse in the early 1920's at Malkin and Malokarachaevski. The breed was perfected when they were crossed with three particular Thoroughbred stallions to form the foundation of the breed: Lok-Sen in 1923, Lestorik in 1939, and Lukki in 1939. All three stallions were bay to dark brown in color, and set the course for the predominant color in the breed today.
