Breed Description: 

The American English Coonhound breed of dog is a large sized breed of dog that should be athletic in appearance and well-balanced. They are usually slightly longer than they are tall with a level top line and a lean build.  They should have a long head with a square muzzle and the long ears should hang down the side of the head.  The tail should be long and set high.

The coat of the American English Coonhound should be very dense and it should lay flat on the dog. The hair should be smooth and short and it should create a smooth line on the dog.  The American English Coonhound can be a number of colors including red and white, black and white, red, white and black with ticking, white and red ticked, or blue and white ticked.

Temperament: 
The American English Coonhound breed of dog is an intelligent breed that is known for being very brave and courageous. This is a friendly breed that is affectionate and well--tempered. They usually get along well with everyone and can be very accepting of strangers. The breed is usually good with children and they do get along well with other dogs, although they may not be the best for homes with small, non-canine pets.
Height: 
The average height for an American English Coonhound is between 23 to 25 inches for a female and 24 to 26 inches for a male.
Weight: 
There is no set weight for an American English Coonhound at this time, however, the weight should in proportion to the height.
Health Problems: 
The American English Coonhound breed of dog is a very hardy breed and only suffers from Hip Dysplasia.
Living Conditions: 
The American English Coonhound breed of dog can do okay in apartments if they are given proper exercise. The ideal is a home with a large fenced yard so they have a place to burn their energy.
Exercise: 
The American English Coonhound breed of dog is a very energetic breed of dog and will need about 60 minutes of exercise each day to stay healthy and happy. It is important to note that the breed will become very destructive if they are bored so exercise is very important. This breed makes an excellent jogging companion.

Grooming: 
The American English Coonhound breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. A wipe down with a damp cloth will keep them clean and they should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis since they can be prone to ear infections and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The American English Coonhound breed of dog was developed in the United States and was originally called the English Fox and Coonhound before the name was changed. The breed was originally developed as a hunting breed and was created to work easily over rough terrain. The breed has remained fairly unknown and was accepted into the AKC Miscellanious group.
