Cat

Breed Description:

The American Curl is a breed of cat distinguished by truly unique ears that curl back in an arc. This breed of cat offers an alert, perky, happily-surprised expression. The American curl is not a result of cross breeding but rather evolution. The American Curls ears are likened to those of a Lynx; you can easily observe the long tufts fanning outward accentuating the swept-back look. The American Curl has been called "Stylish and Elegant" by many observers.

Weight:
The American Curl is a medium sized cat (5-10 lbs)
Health Problems:
They are strong and healthy, remarkably free of the genetic defects that affect many purebred cats.
Exercise:
American Curls are people-oriented, and have been called faithful. They are a playful "kitten-like " breed that will love some room but do well in any environment. The American Curl is very dog-like in their attentiveness; following their owners around, of course not wanting to miss anything.
Grooming:
Both longhaired and shorthaired American Curls have soft, silky coats which lie flat against their bodies. They require little grooming, but enjoy spending time with their owners. An American Curl's ears should be handled carefully because rough handling may damage the cartilage in the ear.
Origin:
The breed originated in Lakewood, California as the result of a spontaneous mutation. In June, 1981, two stray kittens were found and taken in by the Ruga family. The kittens were both longhaired, one black and the other black and white. The family named them Shulamith and Panda respectively, but Panda disappeared several weeks later, making Shulamith the foundation female of the American Curl breed.
