Breed Description: 

The Akbash Dog is a reflection of both mastiff and gazehound origins. The Akbash Dogs have the size, power and a protective nature. With long legs and keen eyesight the Akbash Dog, unlike many recognized western breeds,  is distinct and identifiable. The Akbash Dog is the result of centuries of natural selection as a guardian of livestock in Turkey. In addition to the Akbash Dogs' numerous physical attributes they present a  stable temperament and an exceptionally well developed maternal instinct. The Akbash Dog demonstrates this temperment through its sensitivity and submissiveness, the nurturing of young animals and livestock as well as a fierce protectiveness when those animals are threatened. Obviously these tendensies should be protected and cared for when breeding.

Temperament: 
These dogs are completely dedicated and devoted to owners and animals in its charge. The Akbas dogs are intelligent and courageous; they are natural guardians. The Akbash dog's independent nature allows them to respond swiftly and without guidance in an emergency. Their loyalty and protective instinct make them ideal home and estate guardians in addition to their more traditional role of guarding livestock. There is no difference in guarding ability between the male and female. Akbash Dogs bond to other living creatures very early. They can form strong attachments to livestock, exotic birds, llamas and other animals. They also form strong attachments to people. Once bonded, even without specialized training, the dogs will not hesitate to come to the rescue of their charges if they think they are in danger; risking even their own lives. The typical Akbash Dog does not have a high activity level and is not overly playful as an adult.
Height: 
Akbash dogs generally measure 28 to 31 inches (71 to 79 cm) at the withers; females 27 to 29 inches (69 to 74 cm).
Weight: 
Mature Akbash dogs in trim condition weigh 90 to 130 pounds (41 to 59 Kg); female Akbash dogs weigh from 75 to 100 pounds (34 to 45 Kg).
Grooming: 
The Akbash has a double coat which is formed by coarse guard hairs and a fine undercoat. The Akbash Dogs thickness of the undercoat will vary with the climate and exposure of the dog to the weather. The Akbash Dogs coats are shed seasonally. The Akbash Dog has two varieties of coat length; Long Coat and Medium Coat. As they shed they do require brushing and grooming.
