Horse
The Abtenauer breed of horse is a light draft horse that comes from the mountains of Austria. It is a rare breed, confined to the area from which it gets its name, the Abteneau Valley south of Salzburg. It is unknown how old the breed is, but the first written documentation of it as a distinct breed occurs in 1898.The Abtenauer breed of horse is probably descended from the Noriker type that appeared about 400 years ago. The Abtenauer is similar to the Noriker but smaller of frame and shorter. This breed is strong and hardy. Although considered a light draft horse, it is powerful under harness. It possesses the thick body of a larger cold-blooded draft, but less bulk. It has short, muscular legs which allow a low center of gravity, making this horse sure-footed on mountain slopes. The Abenauer breed of horse is well-known for its natural, smooth-flowing gait. It is often shown in teams of two in competition. The Abtenauer breed of horse is believed to be a very pure breed. The isolation of its native homeland made crosses with other breeds unlikely, as did its unique ability to thrive in the high alpine terrain. The Abtenauer breed of horse has a long mane and tail, feathering on the backs of the legs, and a deep chest for breathing efficiency when working in the thin mountain air. It is seen in a variety of colors: bay, chestnut, black, roan and gray, with black being the most common by far.
